The rich valley between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains has been welcoming guests since the 18th century when pioneers stayed to cultivate the land.  It is home to some of our most famous Founding Fathers.  Join us as we head to the Shenandoah Valley to enjoy the historic contributions, national landmarks, awesome natural beauty as well as one of the most scenic drives in the USA.

Day 1:   This morning we head south and east for our Virginia getaway.  Our overnight stay will be near Winchester, VA. Dinner will be included this evening. D

Day 2:   After breakfast we will depart for Front Royal and the entrance to the Skyline Drive, a designated National Scenic Byway, into the Shenandoah National Park.  Take in the surroundings – the rustling leaves, chirping birds and trickling streams...the feeling of being immersed in nature and of time standing still.  Overlooks afford breathtaking views of the land of Shenandoah.  We will arrive at the internationally famous Luray Caverns, eastern America’s largest and most popular cavern, a U.S. Natural Landmark noted for the profuse variety of formations and unsurpassed natural color.  From well-lighted, paved walkways explore rooms with ceilings 10 stories high, filled with towering stone columns and crystal-clear pools.  Also, hear the haunting sounds of the world’s only Stalacpipe Organ.  After our visit we will continue to Charlottesville where we arrive at our hotel and check in for our two-night stay. Our dinner will be included this evening at an area restaurant. B, D

Day 3:   This morning, after breakfast, we will head to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello.  Jefferson drafted the blueprints for Monticello’s neoclassical mansion, outbuildings, gardens, and grounds.  Lunch will be included at the famous Michie Tavern.  The tavern accommodated travelers with food, drink and lodging more than 200 years ago.  Today, visitors experience the tavern’s past through a historical journey which recreates 18th-century tavern life.  This afternoon we will tour Ash Lawn-Highland, home of President James Monroe.  In 1977, James Monroe and his family moved into their “cabin castle”, adjacent to Jefferson’s Monticello.  Jefferson had urged Monroe to move to the area to create a “society to our taste”.  Original and period French and American furniture, boxwood gardens, and a 535-acre working farm await visitors.  B, L

Day 4:   Breakfast at the hotel will start our day before we check out and begin our journey home.  Plan to arrive back early this evening after a colorful autumn getaway to the Shenandoah Valley Region! B
